Compared with the iPhone 3GS, this model was a full redesign, with a flat glass front and back around a stainless steel band that also serves as the antennas. It added the 960×640 Retina display, the Apple A4 chip and a front camera for FaceTime. The rear camera went to 5 megapixels, with an LED flash and 720p video. It also added a gyroscope and a micro-SIM tray, and memory grew to 512 MB.
