How to create a bootable macOS install USB drive

All Articles Featured Discussion

There’s a lot of different methods out there, but nothing beats the tried and true USB thumb drive installer for installing macOS.

For this method of making a bootable OS install drive, you’ll need to install Installer X.

You’ll also need to visit the Mac App Store and download the newest operating system (macOS 10.13 High Sierra), but do not install it. If you’re trying to get an earlier version of the OS, you may be out of luck. It’s possible to find previous versions from some third party websites, but we don’t recommend this unless you feel confident in your ability to spot harmful files.

This is the big dangerous internet we're talking about. Don't just go around installing any .dmg file you find.
